Edition vs. printing

  • Edition — A new typesetting of the text. Changes to content, layout, or format.
  • Printing — A run of copies from the same typesetting. “Second printing” = same text, printed again.
A first edition, first printing is what collectors want. The very first batch of copies ever produced.

How to identify first editions

Every publisher has different conventions. Common indicators:
PublisherHow they mark firsts
Random House / KnopfNumber line “2 4 6 8 9 7 5 3 1” — presence of “1” means first printing
Scribner’s”A” on copyright page
HarperDate on title page matches copyright date
Pre-1900 booksUsually no explicit marking. Compare publication date to known bibliographic records

What LumiLexicon tracks

  • is_first_edition — Boolean flag
  • is_first_printing — Boolean flag
  • edition_statement — Text from the copyright page (e.g., “First Edition”)
  • number_line — The publisher’s number sequence

Book club editions

Book club editions (BCE) look like first editions but are mass-produced reprints. They’re usually worth very little. Signs of a BCE:
  • No price on dust jacket flap
  • Blind stamp (small indent) on back cover
  • Lighter, thinner paper
  • Different binding cloth
  • No ISBN or a different ISBN
