Edition vs. printing
- Edition — A new typesetting of the text. Changes to content, layout, or format.
- Printing — A run of copies from the same typesetting. “Second printing” = same text, printed again.
How to identify first editions
Every publisher has different conventions. Common indicators:| Publisher | How they mark firsts |
|---|---|
| Random House / Knopf | Number line “2 4 6 8 9 7 5 3 1” — presence of “1” means first printing |
| Scribner’s | ”A” on copyright page |
| Harper | Date on title page matches copyright date |
| Pre-1900 books | Usually no explicit marking. Compare publication date to known bibliographic records |

Book club editions
Book club editions (BCE) look like first editions but are mass-produced reprints. They’re usually worth very little. Signs of a BCE:- No price on dust jacket flap
- Blind stamp (small indent) on back cover
- Lighter, thinner paper
- Different binding cloth
- No ISBN or a different ISBN
