Barcode Scan reads the ISBN barcode on the back of a book and looks it up in Open Library and Google Books.

When to use it

  • Books published after 1970 (when ISBNs became standard)
  • Books with a visible, undamaged barcode
  • When you need a fast, low-cost identification

Limitations

  • No barcode, no scan. Pre-1970 books, many hardcovers, and books with damaged barcodes won’t work. Use Quick Snap instead.
  • Lookup databases don’t always have edition-specific data (printing number, edition statement). You may need to fill in these details manually or via Lexi.
  • Book club editions often share ISBNs with trade editions — double-check the publisher.

How it works

  1. Point your phone camera at the ISBN barcode
  2. The scanner reads the 10 or 13-digit ISBN
  3. LumiLexicon queries Open Library and Google Books for metadata
  4. Results are presented for review — edit and save
